This is Happening Now

Picture
August 17th - September 18th, 2010
Performed at the Elephant Space, Los Angeles

Program Note: This is Happening Now was born out of frustration with my personal sense of time. Why do the past and future often feel more vital than the present? How do you “live in the moment” in a society where moments exist only to be Twittered and Facebooked?

Two months and four short plays later, and I still have absolutely no idea.

These are plays of transformation. Goats turn into birds on tacky tattoos. An entire town turns animal. A simple late-night encounter shifts and shifts and shifts until it’s almost unrecognizable. A woman fights to let go of a grudge she’s held onto for 700 years. Time passes. Things change. Life is weird. People are even weirder.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for coming. We continue to be amazed and humbled by the continual support of our families, friends, and colleagues. Thank you for your faith and generosity. None of this would have been possible without you.

Perfect Teeth for Crocodile Land

Picture
July 11th - August 11th, 2008
Performed at Theater 68, Los Angeles

Program Note: After living in Los Angeles for a year, one thing is certain--we love LA. In fact, the only other thing we know with equal certainty is that we absolutely hate it.

This dichotomy is the basis of Perfect Teeth for Crocodile Land, which explores the trials and tribulations of countless individuals as they attempt to make sense of the City of Angels. We wanted to create a piece of theater that deals with the realities and surrealities of the entertainment industry, a play about all of us--all of the actors, writers, directors, designers, and supporters who believe that there must be some reason for us all to be here, telling stories.

The Giraffe Hunt

Picture
December 11th - 12th, 2006
Performed at UC Irvine

ANDREW: Giraffes have the largest heart of any animal. They need it, because their necks are so long. The heart is responsible for pumping blood all the way up to that massive brain--

MERCEDES: Anyway. The giraffe just kept getting bigger and bigger. Expanding. Growing. Evolving. I was very hungry, and we’d had to wait a long time to get a table. By the time we were finally seated, I was starving, and so instead of taking the time to chew on the skin or nibble on the ears I went straight for the heart. I sliced that giraffe open all the way down to the huge, open heart. It was the size of a beach ball, or maybe the moon—and I swallowed it whole and felt its enormity shift inside of me and in that second I knew that no matter what I did, or who I held, or what I gave… I could never love with as much bigness as that giraffe.
